A customer from back East - New York, I think - emailed us a while back asking if we would make him a custom Cambodian style farmer's knife or brush ax, based on a video he had seen on YouTube. He sent the link. Seth watched the video and was very impressed with the blacksmith and his helper using a basic outdoor shop to form what was essentially a curved brush axe on a long handle. Our shop has a wider variety of tools and home-made fixtures, but it isn't much bigger or different in its fundamental from the outdoor workshop of the blacksmith, presumably in Cambodia, making this tool in the video.

We've used the original tool as seen in the video as inspiration for developing our own version and have made and shipped them to several customers who have managed to track us down. Approximate dimensions of our tool do vary, but we generally use the same 2 1/4 inch wide by 1/4 inch thick 5160 spring steel that we use in our froes. We do some basic hardening and tempering, and sharpen up the inside edge. We've been told by one left-handed user that the way we make it has a weight that feels like a right-handed tool, but that after a few swings he got the feel of it. So, if you are a lefty and want us to make it weighted more for a left handed swing (and switch the sharpened inside edge to be on top when swung from the left, let us know in your order notes and we'll do our best to accommodate.

On the finished tool, the blade is roughly 14" to 16", with a 4" to 6" solid socket and a 33" to 36" ash handle. Final tool length is roughly 50" to 54", and weighs in around 4-5 lbs.
