A Grafting Chisel from Spring Steel

This is a grafting chisel to use when grafting fruit trees and other similar small trees. Based on an old tool no longer made, this chisel's design allows you to open a small split in the tree trunk/wood with the rounded 2" edge. It is sharp enough to go into the wood easily and cleanly, without cutting through the wood fibers. You then remove the rounded chisel side, and tap the triangular wedge side into the split you started with the chisel side. This helps to open up the cut wide enough that the grafting start can be set in around 1.5-2" or so deep. Remove the wedge and the split closes on the new wood. Finish the grafting and move on to the next one.

Quenched in oil and then cleaned and coated in a clear enamel, with on-going maintenance this tool should give a lifetime of service. No tool is unbreakable, and we do our best to balance the need for the toughness of a milder steel with the edge of a higher carbon steel. Tools like this - and our froes, for example - are designed to be struck with wooden mallets rather than with steel. We do our best to keep most of the body as soft and tough as possible, and so we only quench harden the very ends of the chisel and wedge.

This all steel, single-piece construction grafting tool is one to keep track of and should be useful for more than one generation.
