The right sized plow to furrow your garden plot

Ridgers, also called furrowers or furrowing hoes, were once common on American Farms. Today they are used primarily by European smallholders and market gardeners. A ridger is a small middle-buster, i.e. a double faced plow on the end of a pole.

To use a ridger you walk backward pulling the tool through the prepared soil making a clean V-shaped furrow in a single pass. Soil is deposited well outside of the furrow so no repeated scratching is required. If you plant in the furrow bottom (potato's for example) you can flip the ridger over on its backside and walk forward, pushing it, to close the soil over your seeds.

Ridgers are used primarily in kitchen gardens and small plots. However, they also have a place in larger-scale farm work to straighten furrows spoiled by turning a tractor or livestock at each end of the field. Just a few more feet of useful row at the margins can add up to a lot more crop in the field. While ridgers are of limited use in raised beds, anyone growing in long rows will find them to be an excellent, time saving implement.

One note of clarification: while our ridgers are sturdy, they are not intended for plowing to break up heavy compacted ground. You can use them to break light, sandy soils.

A note on the sizes: Small is for tightly spaced rows and pulls a V-shaped furrow 3-4" wide and deep. Medium is the right ridger for the average garden. Our large makes a full, deep furrow in one pass.

There are four ordering options:

Choose head size: standard small (same size as hand tool, 3-4" wide), standard medium (slightly larger 5-7" in width), standard large (typically 6-8" in width). Custom head sizes available, please get in touch for more information.
Choose style of connection: forged solid socket (riveted) or tang-and-ferrule (riveted)
Choose a handle length based on your height or order the solid socket head with no handle.
Have us add a wood-and-metal YD-Grip to your ridger. It makes pulling and pushing the implement much easier and more efficient. The YD-Grip adds about 3-5 inches to the overall length.

The size, shape, and weight of a long handled tool means we must charge an additional $20 shipping fee per tool to our flat rate shipping rate to accommodate for the actual cost of shipping it. Tools that are both long and wide can be quite expensive to ship.
